Art, Deadlines & Dessert
When things get busy and you feel like a walking, counting down deadline, think about Dessert…
Deadlines are an incredibly useful tool for yourself (and others) to make a decision, take action and do the work.
Sometimes, we need a good deadline to do our best work. The urgency, accountability, countdown and pressure can focus our mind and help us to get out of our own way. They can encourage us to finish an artwork, study for a test, complete an assignment or submit our taxes.
They’re an external force to direct our actions. Somehow, we find a way to extend our reach and get the work done.
Dessert on the other hand…
We don’t need an external force to reach for the dessert. After we’ve eaten all our vegetables we ‘get to’ eat our dessert – it’s not something that, *sigh* we ‘have to do.’
Anything can be dessert if we choose to think that way. Yes, even taxes. Although, for me, that’s the lemon sorbet of the dessert-land. It's bitter-sweet; Bitter spreadsheets, Sweet contribution!
We can either look at a deadline as something we ‘have to do’, or we can start to think,
Brilliant, pass the dessert!
ForM is by far my favourite group exhibition of the year to visit and I am honoured to have been one of artists involved in it this year.
If you missed the exhibition, here’s a round up.
