Some characters revel in their position, enjoying the limelight, other’s reach out hoping to connect whilst some recoil at the attention, feeling exposed and laid bare.
A one-of-a-kind ceramic sculpture packed with emotion, hand-crafted design and a touch of light-hearted fun.
The Making of The Attendant:
Each unique figurative sculpture from Podium Series is handmade using high-quality clay and attention to detail. Every part of the design is crafted with meticulous attention to detail by hand modelling features to capture movement, emotion and subtlety of expression.
Starting from the feet up, I try to find the information, the clues, to unlock the story of the character. A twist of a knee, an inverted foot, the tilt of the head or flex of a muscle all culminate to form each figure’s individual persona.
Once made, the sculpture is completed with a combination of raw-oxides to further enhance details before being painted with a satin white underglaze and covered with a crackle glaze. Once out of the kiln, the final part of the process includes coating the sculpture with a warm toasted brown stain that seeps into all the crevasses of the crackle glaze and wipes away to reveal an antique painterly finish.
